Fulmer has become a controversial figure in college football in the past few years due to his involvement with the University of Alabama and their last NCAA probation in 2002. Fulmer was reported to have given NCAA investigators information on the Crimson Tide program in exchange for immunity from alleged violations in his program at Tennessee. This has led to Fulmer becoming a much despised person in Alabama, and Fulmer would not travel to the Southeastern Conference media days in Birmingham, Alabama in 2004, out of fear of being subpoenaed in a lawsuit involving the Alabama NCAA violations.
