Philander Chase

Philander Chase (December 14, 1775 - September 20, 1852) was an Episcopal bishop and founder and first president of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio in 1824. He was the First Rector of Christ Church, New Orleans. He later became Episcopal Bishop of Ohio, Illinois and later Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Chase spent the final years of his life in the frontier community near present-day Peoria, Illinois, where he founded Jubilee College, financed by arduous fund-raising journeys overseas.
