Phaedra's Love

Phaedra's Love is Sarah Kane's modern recreation of Racine's neoclassical work, Phaedra. It centers on Hippolytus, who is rendered lazy and cynical by his upbringing as the son of King Theseus. The kingdom and his family are eventually destroyed by incest, suicide, rape and apathy. In the play Kane employs several techniques that she used throughout her short career, such as her frank depiction of physical, emotional and sexual violence, "In yer face" dialogue and tragic plot structure.
