Peter Norton (born November 14, 1943) is an American software publisher.

Norton was born in Aberdeen, Washington, and graduated from Reed College. In the 1980s, he produced a popular tool to retrieve erased data from DOS disks, which was followed by several other tools which were collectively known as the Norton Utilities.

FileFind, the flagship utility for Norton Utilities Release 2 was derivative of OnDisk Software's Findfile, which Norton received for review in his role as Utilities Editor at PC Magazine. FindFile was not reviewed in PC Magazine, although it was covered in Byte and PC-World. Curiously, the creator of FindFile also was at diminutive Reed College.

Along with NU, Norton produced Norton Commander, a very popular file managing tool for DOS, derived from XTree; and Norton Guides, a TSR program which showed reference information for assembly language and other IBM PC internals, but could also display other reference information compiled into the appropriate file format. He and his company, Peter Norton Computing, also produced several other programs and technical manuals.

In 1990, Norton sold the company to Symantec; however, the Norton brand name lives on in such Symantec products as Norton AntiVirus, Norton Commander, Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton SystemWorks (which now contains a current version of the Norton Utilities), Norton AntiSpam, Norton GoBack (formerly Roxio GoBack), and Norton Ghost .

Peter Norton and his wife Eileen Harris-Norton later founded the Norton Family Foundation, which gives financial support to the arts. Norton resolved a major literary controversy by purchasing letters by reclusive author J.D. Salinger, which were being auctioned by his one-time lover, Joyce Maynard. Norton announced his intention to return the letters to Salinger.
