~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Originally Peter Ellstrom Deuel, he was born in Rochester, New York, and arrived in Hollywood in 1963. His first major television appearance was in the comedy series Gidget (1965), starring a young Sally Field, followed by the 1967 situation comedy, Love on a Rooftop, opposite Judy Carne. Having changed the spelling of his name, he finally made an international impact when he was cast as the outlaw Hannibal Heyes/Joshua Smith in 1970 in a light-hearted comedy western loosely based on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Alias Smith and Jones was at the height of its popularity when, in the early hours of December 31, 1971, Duel apparently shot himself, after drinking heavily that evening. His role in the series was taken over by Roger Davis, but was ignored by many Pete Duel fans, and the series was cancelled in 1973. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ His younger brother, Geoffrey Deuel, is also an actor. His younger sister, Pamela Deuel Hart, is a Christian singer. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
