Perth, Scotland
Perth (Peairt in Scottish Gaelic) is a town in central Scotland. Sitting on the banks of the River Tay, it is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross Council and the county town of the traditional county of Perthshire, in addition to being a historic capital of Scotland.
City status
The classic defintion of Perth has been as a city, and traditional documentation confirmed this has been true since time immemorial. However, in the late 1990s, the UK government and the Scottish Executive re-examined the definition of a city and produced a list of approved cities, from which Perth was ommitted. It is now considered to be a "former city", a similar definition to Brechin or Elgin.
