Percy Cradock


 

The Rt. Hon. Sir Percy Cradock, GCMG, KCMG, CMG, a British civil servant, was born on 26 October 1923.

Cradock joined the British Foreign Office in 1954 and served as Counsellor, then Charge d'Affairs in Beijing from 1966 to 1969 and later as Head of the Assessments Staff in the Cabinet Office. From 1978 to 1984 he was the Ambassador in Beijing, where he opened and led the negotiations on the Hong Kong Joint Declaration. From 1984 to 1992 he was the Prime Minister's Foreign Policy Adviser. Sir Percy retired from government service in 1992. He is an Honorary Fellow of St. John's College, University of Cambridge, where he studied Law as an undergraduate, and was made a Privy Councillor in 1993.
