Penobscot Expedition
Largest American naval expedition of the American Revolutionary War. In 1779, American naval and land forces attempted to destroy the British base at Penobscot Bay, in Maine. The expedition was a spectacular failure, in which the American forces lost 43 ships and approximately 500 men. A committee of inquiry blamed the failure on poor coordination between land and sea forces, and on Commodore Dudley Saltonstall's failure to engage British naval forces.
