Payless ShoeSource is a publically owned company based in Topeka Kansas.

It started with just one store in 1956 in Topeka. It was a new and different way to purchase footwear with its open concept sales floor.

Today, the company has grown to over 5000 stores world wide with stores in the US (4500), Canada(301), Trinidad, South America, Japan(1) and more. Although the company has grown, it still operates in the same self-serve concept it started with.

Known in the past for basic styles at cheap prices, it has now changed its image to become more fashion forward offering brand names such as.. Spalding, Champion, Airwalk and Stanley Work boots at a compettitive price.

It wasn't until 1997 when it became a publically owned company, (sold off from the May dept. store chain) that it expanded into markets like Canada. Now with over 300 stores, it has become the fastest growing retailler in Canada with all 300+ stores opening between 1997 and now.
