During his time as governor, Paul Laxalt became close friends with Ronald Reagan, who was then governor of California. During Reagan's presidency, Paul Laxalt was sometimes referred to as the "First Friend" (cf. First Lady). Paul Laxalt chaired Reagan's presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980 and placed his name in nomination at the Republican National Conventions of 1980 and 1984. Interestingly, this friendship partially explains the high proportion of Filipinos in Nevada as compared to other states. When the government of Ferdinand Marcos fell, Reagan asked his friend to help provide a place for exiled officials and businessmen connected with that government to settle.
