Paul Buckmaster

Paul Buckmaster is an artist, arranger, and composer. He is perhaps best know for his colloborations with Elton John, but he has also worked as an arranger on various hit songs, including David Bowie's Space Oddity, and has played with Miles Davis.

Born in London, England, Paul was taught the cello from age 4. It age eleven, he won a cello scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Paul played and composed in various jazz, avant-garde and experimental ensembles including the Third Ear Band, Suntreader, Nucleus and The Potrzebie Ensemble. In 1969 he helped arrange David Bowie's Space Oddity, better known as Ground Control to Major Tom. He began work with Elton John in 1970, helping arrange his first standout album, Elton John, and beginning a collabrative effor that exists to the present day.

Paul met Miles Davis in 1969. In 1972, Paul began to study in New York City with him. Paul has played on many of Davis' albums on the electric cello.

More recently, Buckmaster won a Grammy Award for Best Arranger for the sweeping and beautiful string arrangement of Train's "Drops Of Jupiter". He was brought back on the band's following album, "My Private Nation".
