Patrick Hepburn, 1st Earl of Bothwell
Patrick Hepburn, 1st Earl of Bothwell was the son of Adam Hepburn, Master of Hailes. Having been the Sherrif of Berwick, he succeded his grandfather Sir Patrick Hepburn, 1st Lord of Hailes as 2nd Lord of Hailes around 1482/1483 (his father had died before his grandfather, hence he did not inherit the title).

Hepburn took part in the rebellion against King James III, and is believed to be one of those directly responsible for the king's death. Under James IV he became Master of the King's Household, custodian of Edinburgh Castle and Sherriff Principal of Edinburgh and Haddington, whilst his brother Adam was made Master of the Royal Stables.

Patrick Hepburn was further appointed Great Admiral of the Kingdom on September 10, 1488, and became the Earl of Bothwell on October 17, 1488. Bothwell also acted as one of the plenipotentiaries sent to conclude the treaty for the marriage of King James IV with Princess Margaret Tudor of England in October, 1501 and he stood proxy for the King at the ceremony of betrothal on January 25, 1502.

Married twice, Bothwell died on October 18, 1508. His son, Adam became the next Earl of Bothwell.
