In Australia, the vast semi-arid areas in the interior of the country contain pastoral runs called sheep stations (south of the dog fence)and cattle stations. These properties may be thousands of square kilometres in size and run low stocking rates to be able to sustainably provide enough feed and water for the stock. Sir Sidney Kidman (1857-1935) set up a chain of such stations to be able to deliver his stock in good condition to the markets.
