A pass (as a noun) can refer to:

• a mountain pass, a low place in a mountain range allowing easier passage
• a strait or passage, usually used of one that is very narrow but still navigable
• permission, such as a hall pass to visit the restroom in school, or a pass to be away from one's unit for a short period in the U.S. military
• a run of a parser or code processor in a compiler (computing terminology).
• an offer, usually more implicit than express, to form an intimate relationship
• in sports such as soccer, basketball, American football, ice hockey, and volleyball, giving control of the ball, puck, or other play object to another member of the same team ("And he makes a pass to his teammate...")
• in the army, pass is a permission to be away from one's military unit for a limited period of time.

Passing or to pass (as a verb) can refer to:

• in sports, the above context of making a pass is also called passing
• in other games, giving up one's turn, or in any context giving up a chance at something ("I'll pass on lunch today, I'm too busy.")
• as a student, achieving an acceptable grade on a test or in a course ("I'm passing English class this semester.")
• while driving, overtaking a slower car in a separate lane ("That car's passing me on the left.")
• passing is a term describing people being accepted as a member of another gender or race, or to appear as not having a certain disability or similar.
• passing means to cause to circulate ("He was arrested for passing forged banknotes.")
• passing off is a common law tort which can be used to enforce unregistered trademark rights.
• passing away is a euphemism of dying
• the process of digestion
