Based in Parramatta, a district in the city of Sydney, the Eels in 1947 were admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, predecessor of the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the current NRL competition.

The Parramatta Eels have been one of the most popular teams in the game's modern era. Since their admission to the NSWRL in 1947 the Eels have only achieved four premiership titles, all occurring in the 1980s when they dominated the competition along with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
