Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 and, after the Queensland Parliament was based in temporary quarters, the first foundation stone for the Queensland Parliament House was laid in 1864, with the George Street frontage then being built in 1868. It is in the French Renaissance style with the roof made from Mount Isa copper. The colonnades were built in 1878 and the Alice Street frontage was commenced in 1887. The 22 storey Parliamentary Annex was built during the 1980s within the grounds of the old Parliament House, and the parliamentary chamber was moved into the 5th floor of the Parliamentary Annex, following the completion of the Annex.
