In 1997, Pacific Telesis Group was acquired by SBC Communications, and although the Pacific Telesis corporate name disappeared fairly quickly, SBC continued to operate the local telephone company as Pacific Bell until September 2001, when the company was rebranded "SBC Pacific Bell". In late 2002, the company was rebranded again, and now does business as "SBC". For regulatory purposes, "SBC California" is the SBC subsidiary that provides service.
