It now forms an electoral ward with a population of approx. 19,500 people. It was once one of the richest areas in England mainly due to its proximity to Liverpool. Oxton Village is an early Victorian settlement with many fine sandstone and brick built houses, much of which now form part of a Conservation Area administered by Wirral Council, with some of its buildings designated by the Department of Natural Heritage as Grade II listed.
