Ottoman (furniture)


 

An ottoman is a piece of furniture, a padded, upholstered seat without arms, often used as a stool or footrest. Also known as a hassock or pouffe. In the United Kingdom, ottomans are usually hollow and can be used as blanket boxes.

According to the Encyclopedia of Furniture by Joseph Aronson, the Ottoman is defined as an "Upholstered seat or bench having neither back nor arms; so named after the Turkish influence in the early 18th century...."
