The Solar Bears started in 1995 and played in the International Hockey League until the league folded in 2001. During their time in the IHL, the team made it to two Turner Cup finals, losing to the Houston Aeros in 1999 and defeating the Chicago Wolves in 2001. Due to the Devos family moving the Grand Rapids Griffins franchise to the AHL, the Solar Bears were not admitted to the American Hockey League upon the IHL's demise due to ownership rules of the AHL.
