Orientation (housing)

Orientation is choosing the direction in which your house faces. This is important to the design of your house as it determines how and how much energy you save. The best direction to have ones house facing is north. Why. This should be done due to the course of the sun in the seasons. The sun rises to the south-east and sets in the south-west during the summer. During the day the suns rays penetrates at a very high angle. In the winter the sun rises in the north-east and sets in the north-west this allows the suns rays to penetrate at a low angle. To prevent the harsh rays coming into the house at summer a roof over hang should be constructed.The house does not need to be position on dead north to take advantage of the suns path. Between 30° each side off north is fine, but to really determine how the how and where the house should sit should be determined by other factors such as overshadowing trees or buildings. The house should also be sited to take as much advantage of the cooling breeze in hot weather.
