Option 30

Option 30 was a new wave band from the 80s, in which Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails played the keyboard and supplied lead vocals. The band also featured Tim Smith (guitars/vocals), Jim Nordstrom (bass/saxophone) and Todd Nero (percussion). In retrospect, Option 30 have been compared to Falco and early albums by The Police. The band managed to record a demo (see below) before Trent Reznor left for The Innocent, Exotic Birds and finally, his own band, Nine Inch Nails. The demo was then shelved until after the explosive success of Nine Inch Nails' album The Downward Spiral, when it was finally re-released.

The band performed at clubs in and around Meadville, Pennsylvania as often as three times a week, often using pre-recorded VHS tapes and televisions to add to their performances, as well as candy bars and party hats for the eager crowds.

Option 30 is extremely obscure; possibly the only reason why anyone knows them today is through The Meathead Perspective, an humorous article-driven website written by Nine Inch Nails fan Meathead for The NIN Hotline. In fact, according to the Perspective, Meathead received an e-mail, supposedly from Tim Smith's brother, stating that the band survived without Reznor for a few years before breaking up. http://theninhotline.net/meatpers/mp_020405.html
