Opernball

Opernball (German for Opera Ball) can mean any of the following:

• any ball which takes place in a theatre where operas are performed;
• in particular, the Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball), an annual society event held at the Vienna State Opera;
• the Viennese Opera Ball in New York (Wiener Opernball in New York), a charity event founded in 1956 by Austrian immigrants to New York City and held annually at the Waldorf Astoria http://www.vienneseoperaball.com/;
• Der Opernball, an operetta in three acts by Victor L?on and Heinrich von Waldberg (libretto), with music by Richard Heuberger. Der Opernball, set at the Paris Opera towards the end of the 19th century, premiered at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, Austria on January 5, 1898;
• several musical films based on this operetta, with the action relocated to Vienna:
• Opernball (1939), a German musical comedy directed by G?za von Bolv?ry starring Marte Harell, Paul H?rbiger, Hans Moser, and Theo Lingen;
• Opernball (1956), an Austrian remake by Ernst Marischka starring Hertha Feiler, Johannes Heesters, Josef Meinrad and again Hans Moser and Theo Lingen. The movie was presumed lost for almost 40 years, until a misplaced negative was discovered at the Austrian Film Archives;
• two German films (1971) entitled Der Opernball, one of them a television movie;
• To the Opera Ball (German title: Opernball), a 1977 novel by Sarah Gainham;
• Opernball, a 1995 novel by Josef Haslinger in which thousands of people are killed in a Neo-Nazi terrorist attack taking place during the Vienna Opera Ball; and
• Opernball, a 1998 television movie by Urs Egger based on Haslinger's novel.
