The operation was initially successful with the capture of the Waal bridge at Nijmegen, but was a failure overall as the final Rhine bridge at Arnhem was not held — the German counter-offensive resulted in the destruction of the British 1st Airborne Division. It is considered the last German victory of the Western Campaign.
