Open Back-End
In software, an Open Back-End is a piece of functionality which is used by various Front-End applications. For example, the Open Back-End might be a big number crunching Server which is used by various customers which each have their own bespoke Front end, API or GUI. All the Front-Ends would format their requests in a way the back-end would understand. The "open" means that standard technology is used in the back-end (for example, Unix rather than TPF).
