Onegin

Onegin is a 1999 film adaptation of Aleksandr Pushkin's novel in verse Yevgeny Onegin. It was directed by Martha Fiennes and starred her brother Ralph Fiennes as Onegin, Liv Tyler as Tatyana, and Toby Stephens as Lensky. It was something of a family project, as two other Fiennes siblings were involved: Magnus Fiennes wrote the music and Sophie Fiennes appeared in a minor role.

As "Eugene Onegin" by A.Pushkin is perhaps the most admired piece of literature in Russia, it was quite a lost fight to try to adapt it for the screen. Yet it seemed to be a long-cherished project of the Fiennes family, coming after Ralph Fiennes had studied at drama school the famous Tatiana love letter to the unfeeling hero. The Fiennes family even went to St-Petersbourg for some winter filming and later dared to show it there for the 200 year of Pushkin's birth. There was some awkwardness, especially in the choice of the music, some over interpretation for instance when, in the capital duel episode, Lensky shoots the first in the film which of course does make Onegin less guilty; some loss of the poetic langage: all didn't unfortunately appeal to the public of Russian specialists. Nevertheless it is a very good adaptation, very honest, beautifully filmed and acted, and makes you to re-read the poem.I would advise young scholars and people interested in Russian literature to look at it. Adapting, acting Shakespeare in any language and style does not offend the English scholars. Why a piece of unknown or inaccessible foreign literature should be protected against a loving adaptation?
