The book is considered García Márquez's masterpiece, metaphorically encompassing the history of Colombia. The novel spans one hundred years of the life of a small Colombian town, said by many to be the native town, or at least a town nearby García Márquez's, based on mountain ranges, lakes and other existing Colombian towns mentioned in the novel.
