The Broadway production opened on October 17, 1965, and played 281 performances. The Broadway production starred Barbara Harris, John Cullum, Clifford David, and Titos Vandis. The Paramount film adaptation (1970), directed by Vincente Minnelli, starred Barbra Streisand, Yves Montand, Jack Nicholson, and Bob Newhart.
