She was born Olga Karnovich at St. Petersburg. After the death of Grand Duke Paul's first wife Alexandra Georgievna of Greece, Olga became the Grand Duke's mistress, bearing him a child Vladimir Pavlovich Romanov. The Grand Duke asked permission of the Emperor to marry her, but he refused. In 1902, the Grand Duke married her morganatically anyway, but the marriage was not approved and she was given no titles. In 1904, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (regent) granted her the title of Countess von Hohenfelsen. The Emperor later acquiesced to their marriage, and made her Her Serenity Princess Paley. Princess Olga left Russia in 1919 with her two daughters, after her son and her husband were murdered by the Bolsheviks, and died in exile in Paris.
