Oldupai Gorge

The Oldupai Gorge is a 30 mile long, steep-sided ravine, part of the Great Rift Valley which stretches along eastern Africa. Oldupai is in the eastern Serengeti Plains, northern Tanzania, east Africa. This is the preferred local spelling, though it is still often referred to as Olduvai. The gorge is named after the Maasai word for the wild sisal plant, Sansevieria ehrenbergiana, commonly called Oldupai.
