First formulated in 1949 by two South African Chemists as a moisturising fluid, then named it Oil of Ulan to make it sound exotic and mysterious. At first it was sold door-to-door but, as sales grew, shop sales began.

The company modified the name of the product in each country so it sounded more pleasing and realistic to consumers. In other countries, it went under names like Oil of Olaz or Oil of Ulan.

Night of Ulay was introduced in 1974, but apart from this new product, the brand remained essentially as one product until it was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1985. Since then the brand has been expanded to include a full range of hype-allergenic variants, cleansers and creams with the aim of meeting the full range of skincare needs, whatever the users age or skin type.

In 1999 it was decided to change the name of the brand yet again, and to make this a globally recognised name. Thus Oil of Ulay or Olaz became Oil of Olay, on a worldwide basis.
