Odorama

Odorama was a scratch and sniff technique used by John Waters as part of his 1982 film Polyester. The cards were distributed to audience members before the show, in the manner of 3D glasses. At a certain point during the film, the viewers were instructed to smell the cards, which they discovered to be feces-scented.

Ten years later, Waters explained "I got to see the film's audiences pay to smell shit!" This is no doubt a reference to the notorious scene in Waters' 1972 film Pink Flamingos wherein transvestite star Divine ate actual dog excrement on camera.

Similar (though arguably less nasty) techniques were occasionally used in mainstream films during the Golden Age of Hollywood. These systems often employed powerful concoctions of fermented apples, bacon grease, rose water, alcohol, and lye, and (due to insufficient ventilation) left many theaters with a stubborn residual odor. So strong was the smell of apples in one theater that the manager was suspected of bootlegging applejack on the premises. See the article aroma-rama for a more detailed account of these techniques.
