Occident (English in from the 14th century, via Old French from Latin occidentem (accusative), "sunset, west" lit. "falling down", c.f. occidere "to slay") is a now antiquated term for the Western world (literally, "the west") as opposed to "orient" (also considered antiquated for Eastern world).
