Prime Minister of Australia William Morris Hughes is expelled from the Labor Party over his support for conscription.

In France, British Expeditionary Force commander Douglas Haig calls off the battle which started on July 1, 1916.
Sunday 19:
Samuel Goldfish (later renamed Samuel Goldwyn) and Edgar Selwyn establish Goldwyn Company (the company later became one of the most successful independent filmmakers.)
