Northern Westchester

Northern Westchester refers to the Northern portion of Westchester County, a suburb of New York City. Northern Westchester County is generally a wealthier area, and it is also considerably more rural (or at least rural-looking) than its southern counterpart. It is known for being the quaintest and quietest of the New York suburbs.

Where the divide between Northern and Southern Westchester occurs is under question. According to the National Weather Service, the line dividing the two sections is Interstate 287, which runs across the county serving communities such as Tarrytown and the county seat of White Plains. According to Westchester Magazine, Pleasantville is where Northern Westchester begins, while White Plains to Pleasantville is in fact Central Westchester.

Besides the desire for a more country-like lifestyle, Northern Westchester is more rural because it is home to two major reservoirs, which provide water for New York City. The Croton Reservoir, located throughout most of Northern Westchester, and the Kensico Reservoir, located in North Castle, New York, is an extremely important watershed region. Because of this, these areas are significantly less tampered.
