Nordmøre


 
 

Nordm?re (lit. "North-M?re") is a landscape of mid-Norwegian county M?re og Romsdal and comprises the municipalities of Kristiansund, Aver?y, Frei, Tingvoll, Surnadal, Rindal, Aure, Halsa, Tustna, Eide, Sunndal, Gjemnes and Sm?la. The only city in Nordm?re is Kristiansund.

Of the thirteen municipalities, five are located (mainly) on islands: Kristiansund, Aver?y, Frei, Tustna, and Sm?la; seven lie on the coast (including between, adjacent to, or at the end of, fjords): Tingvoll, Surnadal, Aure, Halsa, Eide, Sunndal, and Gjemnes; while only one is landlocked: Rindal.

In the early Viking Age, before Harald Fairhair, Nordm?re was a petty kingdom whose ruler was known as the M?rejarl  (lit. "M?re-Earl").
