Norbornene or norbornylene or norcamphene is a bridged cyclic hydrocarbon. It is a white solid with a pungent sour odor. The molecule consists of a cyclohexene ring bridged with a methylene group in the para position. The molecule carries a double bondwhich induces significant strained and significant reactivity.

Norbornene is made by a Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and ethylene. Many norbornene derivatives can be synthesized from Diels-Alder reactions. Related bicyclics are norbornadiene which has the same carbon skeleton but with two double bonds and norbornane which is completely saturated without double bonds.

Molecule: A molecule is the smallest particle of a pure chemical substance that still retains its chemical composition and properties. The science of molecules is called molecular chemistry or molecular physics, depending on the particular aspect of focus. Molecular chemistry is concerned with the laws gover...

Methylene: In chemistry, methylene is a divalent functional group CH2 derived formally from methane. The name "methylene" is used for two types of groups:...

Double bond: A double bond in chemistry is a chemical bond between two chemical elements involving four bonding electrons instead of the usual two. The most common double bond, that between two carbon atoms, can be found in alkenes. Many types of double bonds between two different elements exist, for example in ...
