In New York City, NoHo, for North of Houston Street (as contrasted with SoHo, South of Houston) is a small area of Manhattan, roughly bounded by Houston Street on the south, The Bowery on the east, Astor Place on the north, and Broadway on the west. NoHo is wedged between Greenwich Village, west of Broadway, and the East Village. When Lafayette Street was opened in the 1820s, it was one of the most fashionable streets in New York: the only survivor of that era is half of the original Colonnade Row, 1833, perhaps designed by Alexander Jackson Davis for speculative builder Seth Geer. Across from it is the Public Theater. When it was a light manufacturing and warehouse district, Robert Mapplethorpe's loft was in NoHo.
