NFL Coach of the Year Award

The NFL Coach of the Year Award is presented annually by the Associated Press to the NFL coach who has done the most outstanding job of working with the talent he has at his disposal. The award was first presented in 1955. From 1960 to 1969, before the old NFL and AFL merged to become the current NFL, an award was also given to the most outstanding coach from the AFL. Even after the leagues merged in 1970, separate awards were given to the best coaches from the two conferences; this practice continued until 1997, when the decision was made to award only the single best coach from either conference. Coaches who won the AFL Coach of the Year Award during the 1960's are listed below alongside that decade's winners of the NFL award, as the AFL, though a separate league during that time period, is considered in retrospect to be the incipient AFC of today's NFL.
