Newport News, Virginia

Newport News is an independent city located in Virginia. It is on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, on the north shore of the James River extending to its mouth Hampton Roads. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 180,150. A more recent 2005 cencus shows the cities population has grown to 195,347.

Education

The main provider of primary and secondary education in the city is Newport News Public Schools. Several private schools are located in the area as well. Christopher Newport University is located with the city, and Hampton University, Old Dominion University and The College of William and Mary are located nearby.
