New York Law School
New York Law School ("NYLS") is an independent law school located at the heart of Manhattan a couple miles north of the World Trade Center site. It is an American law school with over 1,500 students. NYLS' Manhattan location, in the midst of the country's largest concentration of government agencies, courts, law firms, banks, corporate headquarters, and securities exchanges, has shaped the NYLS' identity and curriculum.
History
NYLS was established in 1891 and has operated continuously since then. This makes NYLS one of the older law schools in the United States. NYLS was established by then Columbia College School of Law faculty, students, and alumni who were protesting their trustees? attempts to dictate the teaching methods used by professors. The major figure in the rebellion against Columbia and the subsequent creation of NYLS was Columbia Law School?s founder, Theodore Dwight, a major figure in the history of American legal scholarship. In 1894, NYLS established one of the first evening divisions to provide those in the workforce or with family obligations a flexible alternative to full-time legal studies.
