New Trier High School

Overview

The school is ranked #293 on Newsweek's 2005 list of the Best High Schools in America. Many students and faculty raised objections to this list's technique of evaluating school based exclusively on the school's ratio of AP tests taken to students for the graduating class. If based on test scores, it was estimated that New Trier High School would be in the top 50 high schools in the country. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7723397/site/newsweek/?page=3

The senior class has a long tradition of elaborate pranks. Some have included:

  • Letting loose three pigs within the halls bearing the numbers 1, 3, and 4
  • Sending the master key to all the students (as a crime, this resulted in significant disciplinary action against several students)
  • Placing a Yugo on the roof
  • With so much affluence in the community, however, the school has also has had a notorious drug problem, as featured on the 1996 cover article of Time Magazine titled "High Times at New Trier High."http://www.time.com/time/archive/preview/0,10987,985657,00.html If you look hard enough you can see one of these students at Buffalo Joe's Buffalo wings in Evanston, Illinois.

New Trier currently has the most state championships of any high school in Illinois, with over 85, but none in Football or Basketball. In May 2005, New Trier was ranked #12 in Sports Illustrated's list of the Top 25 High School Sports Programs in America. The mascot is the Trevian, named after soldiers from the city of Trier, Germany during the Roman Empire. From 1901 to 1981, the school's teams were known as the "Indians", which they were also called while they were New Trier East. New Trier West was known as the Cowboys from 1965 until 1981 when the two schools merged. Its biggest public/conference rival is Evanston Township High School, since both of the schools compete in the Central Suburban South conference. The two basketball games that the two schools play each year draws so many people, that starting in the 2001-2002 school year, they began to play their games at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The schools biggest non-conference/private rival is Loyola Academy, which is located in Wilmette, just down the road from the Northfield campus.
