Orde baru began with Supersemar (Surat Sakti Sebelas Maret, Power Mandate of March 11), a presidential decree issued by then-president Sukarno in 1966 that mandated Suharto to eradicate Indonesian Communist Party (Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI)) and take whatever means necessary to secure the country. The mandate empowered Suharto to finally ban the communist party and forced Sukarno to abdicate his position. Suharto himself formally ascended to the presidency by 12 March 1967.
