New Brighton once possesed a tower (built 1898) which was 621ft high - taller than the Blackpool Tower. However the tower was dismantled after World War I, during which it was closed, due to lack of maintenance. The building on which the tower was erected continued until it was gutted by fire in 1969. Other landmarks include Perch Rock Battery, which was built in 1826 to provide defence for the Mersey ports. It still stands today, and is used as a museum and sometimes as a party venue. New Brighton also has a lighthouse (built 1827-30) to protect ships entering the River Mersey
