The term, which first came into general use in the early 1970s, is sometimes used in a generic sense to denote all contemporary forms of anti-Semitism, but is also used to distinguish an allegedly new kind of anti-Semitism from traditional forms of anti-Semitism, which were motivated by racial theory, religion or nationalist chauvinism.

In the latter sense, the new anti-Semitism is seen as distinct — in its rhetoric, its pretexts, and its locus on the political spectrum — from the old anti-Semitism that continues to exist alongside it.
