Nevada is a city located in Story County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,658. It is the county seat of Story County{{GR|6}}. The city's name is pronounced differently from the state of the same name: IPA /nəˈveɪɾə/ .

The founding of Nevada

The town was founded October 12, 1853 by the two commissioners Joesph M. Thrift of Boone County and Johnson Edgar of Jasper County by appointment of the Iowa Legislature to find the county seat of Story County. The town's name, Nevada, was proposed by Joseph Thrift after the Sierra Nevada mountains. The naming of the town came a decade before naming of the state of Nevada.
