Nessarose
Nessarose Thropp is the name of the Wicked Witch of the East in ' by Gregory Maguire, as well as in the Broadway adaptation, Wicked. She is the younger sister of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. In the novel, Nessarose also has a younger brother named Shell.

Nessarose is a very pious and religious character. In both the book and musical she was born disabled (without arms in the novel and without the use of her legs in the musical). She is the owner of the infamous "ruby slippers" (silver in both the book and the musical) which were given to her by her father and enchanted (by Glinda in the Baum book and classic movie and by Elphaba in the musical) to help her walk and stand on her own.

Nessarose is the future governor of Munchkinland and, when she takes power, her corrupt ruling causes her to be dubbed "The Wicked Witch of the East." In the musical, she is displayed in a more tragic light, when she becomes obsessively infatuated with a munchkin named Boq.
