Neo-Catholicism

The narrow dogmatic Catholic doctrine that was practiced in nineteenth-century Spain. It sought to curb freedom of thought by censorship of the press and university lectures; it combated any attempt to introduce into Spain any other faith than the state-supported Catholic church; it extolled the Inquisition and would have gladly seen a return to force used to impose Catholicism. In politics Neo-Catholicism supported the Absolutist Pretender, Don Carlos, and hoped, by means of civil war, to place him on the throne. The object of the wrath of the Neo-Catholics were the Liberals.
