His latest book is 'Hatless Jack' is an examination of why hats went out of style and what we all lost when they did.

In his writings, Steinberg adopts an acerbic and contrarian persona. He ultivates his persona by replying to all negative e-mail with a form e-mail response.

In the mid-1990s The Chicago Reader ran a popular column, written by Steinberg under the pseudonym "Ed Gold", called "BobWatch: We read Bob Greene so you don't have to." The column highlighted Greene's cliches and flaws.
