Harris' singing voice landed him a role as Tobias Ragg in several concert performances of Sweeney Todd. He also was in the 2000 film The Next Best Thing, where he played David, the Rupert Everett character's boyfriend. He has made a guest appearance in the episode "Girls, Interrupted" on the sitcom Will & Grace in which his character was a former homosexual trying to convert others to heterosexuality, but ended up being converted back to homosexuality by Jack (played by Sean Hayes). He also appeared in an episode of ' in 2004, cast against type as a Jeffrey Dahmer-like serial killer.

In 2004 he performed a dual role of the Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald on Broadway in the controversial musical revival of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins.

Also, rumors abound in the theater community that Harris' professional relationship with Sondheim - who is several decades his senior - led to a sexual one.
